Budapest
A centrum rövid története
1992. februárjában a Fővárosi Bíróság hivatalosan is bejegyezte egyházunkat. A Buday László utca több éven keresztül adott helyet központunknak, mely egyre gyarapodott. Innen a Liszt Ferenc térre költöztünk, majd az Astoria környékére, aztán a Teréz körútra, mindig újabb bérelt lakásba.
Jelentős esemény történt 2000. januárjában Budapesten: első ízben adott tanítást és beavatásokat a 17. Karmapa, Táje Dordzse. A négy napos programon ötezer ember vett részt.

Budapest
A short history of the center
Lama Ole Nydahl first visited Budapest in October 1988. After that, his first meditation center of Hungary was founded under the name Karma Dechen Ozel Ling (The Island of Radiant Light of Highest Joy). The first center was established in a flat of two Buddhists in Buday László street.
Our organization was legally registered as a church by the Court of Budapest in February 1992.
The flat in Buday László street gave us a base allowing our center to grow for several years.
Later, we relocated to several other rented flats. First we moved to Liszt Ferenc square, then to Astoria, and on to Teréz boulevard.
In January 2000, a significant event took place in Budapest: the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje gave teachings and initiations here for the first time. Five thousand people attended the four-day event. In March 2001, after a long search, we bought a former beer factory building in the center
of Budapest. It was located next to Rózsák square in the Huszár pedestrian street. Thanks to the significant financial support of many practitioners, we were able to reach our goal of buying the property. This place has become our current center which is – at present – the biggest Diamond Way Buddhist Center of Europe with a surface area of 3,600 m2. Our long-term goal is to transform it into an international cultural and meditation center. Lama Ole inaugurated our center on 30th July 2001 to much fanfare. In the facility one can find a modern gompa capable of holding 140 people, a library, a dharma-shop, and a residential area. Our center is open to interested visitors daily between 6:00 p.m.
and 10:00 p.m. Approximately 50-120 people come to the public meditation each day at 7:00 p.m. Those visiting us for the first time may come from 6:00 p.m. to receive answers to their questions about Buddhism, meditation, and our centers.
Meditation Center Budapest
The Budapest center in of the Diamond Way Buddhist Community found its final place in a former beer factory building in 2001. It is near the Keleti railway station in Huszár street in district 7. ( 4.-5. Roses Square)
The place was already quite huge when we bought it. We needed one and a half hours to see every bit of it. It was difficult to imagine how we were going to buy such a big building and how it was going to be filled with interested and meditating people every evening. After some years, it all has become reality. Through some major construction work over the past few years, we managed to renovate the ruined building and the facade, which is a protected monument.
Among the various projects, we built a modern meditation room (called a gompa), a cafeteria, a wonderful dharma-shop with a library, and a gym suitable for weight training. We also have a restaurant on the outside of the building, the Babar Longue Bar, which many may be familiar with. The center has been filled with residents during the past few years, and we managed to renovate more and more flats in the old parts of the building.
What is it that is attractive for people visiting us? It is the fact that people can join us in a variety of ways. Many are looking for lasting values and would like to know more about their minds.
We ensure that our “main products”, Buddhist teachings, are available in the following ways:
Our center is open for everyone from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every day, and we kindly answer any questions people may have along with a cup of tea. Every evening we have a half hour long guided meditation. On Monday evenings, people who are interested can take part in a public teaching where they can listen to basic information about Buddhism. (Both are free.).
In our library one can find different kinds of Buddhist literature, and in our shop one can buy statues, thangkas (Tibetan scroll paintings), and other items related to Buddhism – malas (mediation garlands) or gaos (medals for storing relics). For those who have already been sniffing around for a while, there are many other possibilities to join us. Our community is based on voluntary work done in one's free time, and decisions are made according to meritocracy (merit-democracy) . It means that those who work also have the right to say things and make decisions.
All these things obviously result in forging a fantastic community. Many types of people come to our center: different professionals, young and lively people, who are usually between the ages of 18 and 60. This also proves that anyone can join us.
As for our other programs, we also organize exhibitions, meditation courses, and different
parties. We travel together to similar programs abroad. We organize meditation weekends, and we visit all the Hungarian and Transylvanian meditation centers as well.
What are future challenges? Of course, we have plans for further development. We know the teachings of the Diamond Way while we live in the middle of our society, where there is a demand for such knowledge. Luckily, many independent and critical people pay attention to these teachings.
For all these possibilities, we have to ensure high quality conditions. As we have overgrown the community rooms of our meditation center, in 2010 we launched a two-year project which will turn this place into a gem of district 7 based on our ideas. Our plans include erecting a new
wing on the site of our current main building and maintaining the protected wing facing Rózsák square and Huszár street. When the construction is finished, we will have room for a 450 m2 (!) meditation room, a bigger community room, a dharma-shop and library, and further additional
places. We are going to finance this project through the 1% allocation of personal income tax payments and from donations we have received over the past few years.
The Budapest center is the biggest urban center of the 650 Diamond Way Buddhist centers founded by Lama Ole Nydahl around the world. Because of its size and location, it also fulfills the role of an international center for the central European, eastern European, and Balkan region. In addition, it supports groups in Transylvania, Transcarpathia, Slovak centers near the border, Serbia, and Bulgaria. Anyone who drops by can also find an international buzz.
We are looking forward to meeting anybody to meditate together, and we offer the opportunity to everyone – based on their level of openness and interest – to become acquainted with Diamond Way Buddhism, us, and our activities.
